The Cape Fear Learning Collaborative is comprised of Culture Club, Zoo Crew, Zoo(m), and the Lending Library. It is a
not-for-profit cooperative learning endeavor established in 2016 by homeschooling families in and around Wilmington. The purpose of this endeavor was to establish community and build
friendships amongst homeschooling kids and their parents while creating group learning and field trip opportunities that aren’t typically available to single family homeschools.
Culture Club is a girl’s geography club. Each month, the girls study a different country or
geographic area. They meet two Fridays a month. The first meeting is an introduction to the topic of study through games, crafts, snacks, and a learning station setup. The second meeting is either a cooking class at a gourmet shop in Wilmington or an art lesson taught by a local professional. Middle and high school girls have the opportunity to help lead learning stations,
plan lessons, and assist in coordinating events. Culture Club is formatted so that high schoolers can use their time spent there as a CTE credit.
Zoo Crew is a boy’s zoology club. Each month, the boys study a different animal or group of animals. They meet two Fridays a month to enjoy an introduction to the topic, themed snacks and crafts, and games. Typically, the second meeting of the month is either a field trip or an animal demonstration by local experts or rescue organizations.
Zoo(m) is a new concept being formed for middle and high school boys (ages 10 and up) that are transitioning out of Zoo Crew. It will focus on STEM, life skills, and physical activity. Boys wishing to participate will be exploding watermelons, launching rockets, analyzing Dude Perfect trick shot videos, and do basic vehicle maintenance. Zoo(m) will meet two Fridays a month during Zoo Crew.
The Lending Library is a developing project for moms to share resources AND to give homeschool kids the traditional school library experience (on a smaller scale). Moms and students can visit the website, "check out" books, and pick them up at the next Friday meeting. The Lending Library will be maintained by high school students.

Culture Club was founded as a unit study based geography club for girls. It was started by a small group of families that desired a fun educational outlet for homeschooled children to learn, make new friends, and enjoy group activities/field trips. As the girls' group continued to grow, the brothers were clamoring for opportunities of their own. Zoo Crew was crafted to give the boys similar opportunities. With over 60 families in our program and our 7th successful year, the group is evolving to continue giving students of all ages exciting educational opportunities.
